What to look for when choosing a makeup artist

Most brides are overwhelmed with the very idea of planning a wedding and have no idea where to even start when looking for a makeup artist. I’ve talked to so many brides and understand what a daunting task it can be. Here are some things to consider and look out for to make life easier when choosing a makeup artist.

1. Education

With an endless supply of youtube videos and online materials there are more and more self proclaimed makeup artists popping up. Don’t get me wrong some self taught makeup artists are just as good as makeup artists that have gone through professional training. Others may have only perfected doing makeup on their own face and don’t know what makeup will work for everyone else - every single face is different. A certified makeup artist knows that the same makeup will look different on each person and has learned applications on all different skin types and face shapes. The certification process involves intensive practice on different skin types, eye shapes, face shapes, skin colors, etc. making the artist ready for different faces they may encounter

2. Experience

Be sure to check out their portfolio and make sure they have a working website -- not just an Instagram page. Reputable makeup artists will have a professional looking website showcasing their work. Portfolios should show a wide range of looks from natural to more dramatic looks. If only one makeup look is shown this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but its probably a sign that they only know how to do this one look and this is probably what look you should expect. Also be on the lookout for over-photoshopped images!!!

3. Referrals

Reading online reviews are great, but a referral almost always guarantees a good makeup artist. If someone you know recently got married reach out and ask them about their experience and if they would hire them again.

4. Communication

This is something that is often times overlooked, but very important to consider. Make sure your makeup artist is responsive and also that your personalities click. A makeup artist may be amazing, but you might have a hard time communicating with them. Just remember that this person is going to be spending some of the most important moments with you so it is very important that you don't clash!

5. Price

Price is something we have to talk about. You need to find an artist that fits in your wedding budget, but this is not something you should skimp on. You truly do get what you pay for. A higher priced makeup artist is priced that way for a reason. They have gone through extensive training, use high end products, know how to properly sanitize, and are professional.

6. Trial

Last but not least book a trial! A trial is the best way for you to decide if a makeup artist is the right fit for you. During a trial the makeup artist will create a customized look based on inspiration pictures from a previous communication. A trial does not guarantee your date, makeup artists tend to book dates on a first come first serve basis, so don't wait too long to put a deposit down on your date. Most brides even book their wedding date before they book their trial, but if you are unsure do the trial first, just be ready to lock down the date with a deposit and a contract when you're sure they're the perfect fit.

Why you should hire a professional makeup artist for your wedding day

Engaged over the holidays? Now what? Tossing around the idea of hiring a professional makeup artist, but still aren’t sure if it’s worth it? Most women know how to apply their makeup and think “why not do it myself and save some money?” Here are some reasons why finding and booking a makeup artist should be a top priority on any brides to-do list.

Pictures are forever!

While your wedding day is probably going to fly by, your pictures will be something you have that allows you to relive the best moments of your special day. Applying makeup for everyday use versus applying makeup to be photographed in is very different. Having a professional makeup artist that is trained in HD makeup application will make sure your makeup holds all day and photographs beautifully.

No stress

Your wedding day is guaranteed to be busy and might have a few unexpected hiccups. A makeup artist’s one and only priority on your wedding day is making sure you feel and look your absolute best. Hiring a makeup artist will take the stress out of getting ready and allow you to deal with any other challenges that may arise. You deserve to sit back, relax, and get pampered on one of the most important days of your life!

But why not have my friend do it?

It might seem like a better option to have a friend or family member do your makeup to save a few bucks, but there are some major differences between hiring a professional makeup artist and a beauty enthusiast. Professional makeup artists do this for a living and have perfected their craft! They are skilled in color correcting, matching you with the correct foundation, and using the best colors to compliment your features. We also keep a vast array of products in our kits that will allow your makeup to last all day through the hugs, kisses, and tears.

What about my bridal party?

Ok imagine this: You tell your bridal party they are in charge of their own makeup and to do a natural eye and nude lips. One of your girls show up with smoked out eyes and red lips. Another shows up with blue glitter all over her eyelids. If you are seeking a uniform and consistent look with your bridesmaids you may also want to consider hiring your makeup artist to do the wedding party as well.

Makeup artists will always suggest having a trial run before your wedding. During the trial run you can express your vision to the artist and try a few looks so you can find out what you like and what you don’t like. A trial will help ensure things so smoothly on the day of your wedding.
